Gynaecological Oncologists

Professor Jonathan Carter

MBBS, DipRACOG, FACS, FRANZCOG, CGO, MS, MD

Professor Carter received his specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and his subspecialty training in gynaecological oncology at the University of Minnesota in the United States. He spent 6 years at the University of Minnesota, rising to the academic level of Assistant Professor. He returned to Australia in 1996 to assume the Head of Gynaecological Oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. This Unit is an integral part of the Sydney Cancer Centre.

As a Certified Gynaecological Oncologist (CGO), Professor Carter is involved in the diagnosis, surgical care and postoperative management of patients with suspected gynaecological cancer. In addition his special interest includes ovarian cancer screening utilizing vaginal ultrasound. He has broad experience in the management of Pap smear detected abnormalities, colposcopy and treatment of lower genital tract and cervical dysplasia.

He has been awarded a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota and Doctorate of Medicine from the University of New South Wales for his research into ultrasound assessment of gynaecological tumours with special reference to detecting tumour blood flow patterns. He has also received awards including the Virginia K. Pierce Award from The Society of Memorial Gynecologic Oncologists, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, New York and the Young Investigators Award from The Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He has also received the Viertel Clinical Investigatorship award and grant from the Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation.

He is a member of numerous prestigious and learned societies including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, American Society of Gynaecological Oncologists, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, Australian Society of Gynaecological Oncologists, the International Society of Gynecologic Cancer and the Australian Medical Association.

He has over 100 published peer reviewed papers, 12 book chapters and 3 books to his credit (see below)

His current appointment is Professor of Gynaecological Oncology at The University of Sydney, Head of Sydney Gynaecologic Oncology Group at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Sydney Cancer Centre and Head Gynaecology Services, Central at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Professor Carter sees private patients at the Royal Prine Alfred Medical Centre, Macquarie Street in Sydney and at has outpatient sessions in Gloucester House, within the Sydncy Cancer Centre at The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Dr Selvan Pather

MBChB (Natal) FCOG (SA) FRANZCOG CGO

Dr Pather was appointed Staff Specialist in Gynaecologic Oncology at the Royal Prince Alfred and Liverpool Hospital in 2005. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training at the King Edward VIII Hospital in South Africa. He then started the first Gynaecologic Oncology Unit at The King Edward VII Hospital and after 18 months as Head of Gynaecologic Oncology moved to New Zealand to take up an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Otago. Dr Pather completed further Gynaecologic Oncology training in Australia between 2002 and 2004, successfully completing the Australian sub-specialty examinations (CGO) in 2004. His interests include laparoscopic surgery and the role of radiotherapy in Gynaecologic oncology.
